What does a preparation programme solve?
Foundation and pathway programmes close the gap between your school leaving qualification and the entry requirements of your target university. Sometimes that gap is language, sometimes subject content, and most often both.

What the programme covers
Why it is needed
In some countries a Turkish high school diploma is not accepted for direct entry to a degree; the UK and much of Europe require an additional preparatory year. The programme closes that gap while bringing language up to university threshold and building academic writing, presentation and research skills.
How the conditional offer works
Most preparation programmes are tied to one or several universities and guarantee a place on the degree to students who reach a set grade average. Which universities and which subjects that link covers differs by programme — we always confirm it in writing before enrolment.
Who is a preparation programme for?
Not everyone needs one. If any of the following describes your situation, it may be the right step.
My diploma is not accepted for direct entry.
In countries where a Turkish high school diploma does not give direct degree entry, a foundation year is a required step. It is a difference of systems, not a shortcoming.
My academic English is not there yet.
Pathway programmes run language and academic subjects together, so you progress on one timeline instead of a separate language school followed by a separate application cycle.
I want to switch subject areas.
Where your background does not match the target degree, a preparation year is the most orderly way to take the required core subjects.
Going straight into first year feels like a lot.
The preparation year takes place on a university campus but in smaller classes with closer support — a gentler entry into the academic system.

Programme types
Preparation comes in more than one format. The type and length follow from which gap you actually need to close.
Foundation
A year between school and university. Academic subjects and language run together; on successful completion you enter year one of the linked university.
International Year One
Unlike a foundation, this year counts as the first year of the degree and the student continues into year two. It saves a year overall, but entry requirements are higher.
Pre-Master
For graduates who do not fully meet master’s entry requirements. One or two terms of research methods, academic writing and subject modules.
Academic English
A 6–12 week intensive course for students holding an offer but slightly short on language. On successful completion a separate language exam is usually not required.
Subject-specific pathway
Module content differs by target subject group. Where the degree is already chosen, a subject pathway progresses faster than a general foundation.
On-campus programme
Some programmes are delivered on the university campus, giving access to the library, labs and societies from day one and making the transition less abrupt.
How the process works
- Goal and profile conversation
We discuss the subject, country and budget, and assess your transcript and language level. This conversation is free.
- Gap analysis
We establish whether the gap is diploma recognition, subject content or language. The programme type and length follow from that.
- Programme and progression check
A shortlist is presented, and for each programme we confirm in writing which universities and subjects it leads to, and at what grade.
- Application and conditional offer
The file is prepared and submitted and the conditional offer is secured. The language exam timetable is planned around the offer conditions.
- Visa and settling in
Once the offer is confirmed, accommodation is arranged, the visa file prepared and the appointment tracked.
- During the programme and at progression
Grades are monitored, with early intervention if the progression requirement is at risk. We stay with you through the degree application.
Documents and prerequisites
The list below is a general framework. The exact set depends on the destination, the provider and the programme type; you receive a list specific to you once your file is opened.
- High school diploma and transcript with sworn translation
- Language exam result (IELTS, TOEFL or the provider’s own test)
- Motivation letter
- A teacher or counsellor reference
- Passport and biometric photograph
- Bank statement showing sufficient funds
- Offer letter and enrolment confirmation
- Travel health insurance
- Apostille of the documents
Conditional offer terms and the grade needed for progression differ between programmes; we confirm those conditions in writing before enrolment.
When should you start?
Preparation programmes have two main intakes: September and January. Allowing for the language exam and the visa process, starting at least six months before the intake is realistic.
- 8–10 months aheadGoal and programme decision
Subject, country and budget become clear; the gap analysis sets the programme type.
- 6–8 months aheadApplication file
Transcripts and references are gathered, the motivation letter written and the file sent.
- 4–6 months aheadConditional offer and language exam
The offer arrives; if the language score is missing, the exam is scheduled around its conditions.
- 2–3 months aheadVisa file
Proof of funds is prepared, the application submitted and the appointment tracked.
- The month before departureAccommodation and arrival
Accommodation is confirmed, flights planned and the pre-departure briefing held.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start a degree directly without preparation?
In some countries and at some universities, yes. Whether a Turkish high school diploma is accepted for direct entry varies by country and institution; once we see your profile we can tell you which route is open.
What is the difference between Foundation and International Year One?
A foundation is a preparatory year before the degree; on completion you begin year one. International Year One counts as year one itself and the student continues into year two. The latter has higher entry requirements.
Is progression to the university guaranteed on completion?
Most programmes reserve a place at the linked university for students who reach a set grade average. That is a conditional entitlement rather than a guarantee; we confirm in writing which universities and subjects it covers before enrolment.
Can I apply without a language score?
Yes. Many providers run their own placement test, or issue a conditional offer and expect the language score before you start. We build the timetable around that.
Do preparation modules count towards the degree?
Foundation modules are usually preparatory and do not carry degree credit. On International Year One programmes the modules do count as first-year credit.
How long does it take?
Foundation and pathway programmes usually run 9–12 months, a pre-master one or two terms, and academic English 6–12 weeks. The length depends on the gap being closed.
Can I change subject area?
A preparation year is a suitable point to change field, provided you take the core modules the target degree requires. We choose the programme with that in mind.
What makes prices vary?
Country and city, whether the provider is university-owned, the length of the programme and accommodation type set the total. On-campus programmes are generally priced higher.
