About the country

About China

With thousands of years of history, cuisines that change from region to region and a vast geography, China is a place of discovery in itself. The official language is Mandarin Chinese, and a variety of local dialects are also spoken in different parts of the country. Ancient buildings, classical gardens and modern skyscrapers can all be found within the same city, creating a rich setting where a language learner discovers something new every day.

Programmes here consist of General Chinese courses for those who want to learn the language. Shanghai offers a lively big-city experience, with historic buildings along its riverfront, a modern skyline and an international atmosphere. Nanjing, on the Yangtze River, is a calmer alternative with a strong traditional character, known for its historic city walls, museums and tree-lined streets.

Chinese is a tonal language, so learning to distinguish and pronounce its sounds develops far more naturally when you hear and speak it every day. Learning characters takes time, but street signs, menus and quick chats at the market give you constant practice outside the classroom.
