Europe
A multilingual country with four official languages, at the heart of the Alps.
In Switzerland, the country of the Alps and lakes, German, French, Italian and Romansh are all recognised as official languages. Different languages are spoken in different regions, so a short train journey can take you into another language and culture. With orderly cities, mountain scenery and Geneva as host to many international organisations, Switzerland offers a calm yet multicultural place to live.
Switzerland is a popular choice for learning French and German. General and academic French, general German, exam preparation and programmes for professionals lead the way. French-speaking Geneva and Montreux on Lake Geneva, and German-speaking Zurich, are natural options depending on which language you want to learn, and all three offer lakeside life close to nature.
A multilingual country with four official languages, at the heart of the Alps.
Short journeys take you between French- and German-speaking regions, so you hear the language you are learning, and others, in real life.
Geneva, Zurich and Montreux sit on lakes close to the mountains, so hiking, skiing or time by the water can become part of your weekends.
Geneva, home to many international organisations, and Zurich, a major financial centre, offer an inspiring environment for students with professional goals.
It varies with altitude: lakeside cities have mild summers and cold winters, while mountain areas have long, snowy winters.
Trains, trams and lake boats form a punctual, well-connected transport network. Lakeside walks, museums, music festivals and mountain trips shape social life, and order and punctuality matter in everyday life.
