The Americas
Spanish in Santiago, between the Andes and the Pacific.
Chile is a long, narrow country running north to south between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. The Atacama Desert lies in the north, vineyard-covered valleys in the centre and the lakes and glaciers of Patagonia in the south. Chileans' fast speech and distinctive everyday expressions can be surprising at first, but they offer a valuable chance to tune your ear to real-life Spanish.
Chile's General Spanish programmes are in the capital, Santiago. Built right at the foot of the Andes, the city combines modern business districts, historic squares, museums and green hills, offering both organised city living and easy access to nature. You can study in a dynamic capital during the week and set aside weekends for the coast, the wine valleys or the mountains.
Spanish in Santiago, between the Andes and the Pacific.
Short trips from Santiago take you to mountain hikes, ski resorts in the winter months and spectacular views of the Andes.
Valparaíso, known for its colourful houses and street art, and neighbouring Viña del Mar are ideal for day or weekend trips from Santiago.
Getting used to the Chilean accent and local expressions strengthens your listening skills and helps you feel more at ease in other Spanish-speaking countries.
Santiago has a Mediterranean-type climate: hot, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. As it is in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are the reverse of Türkiye's.
An extensive metro network makes getting around the city easy. Neighbourhood markets, city views from the hills, cafés and weekend nature trips shape the natural flow of student life in Santiago.
