The Americas
Learn Spanish in Central America, surrounded by tropical nature.
Costa Rica is a Central American country between the Pacific and the Caribbean Sea, known for the natural diversity of its rainforests, volcanoes and national parks. Spanish is the official language, and the phrase 'pura vida', which Costa Ricans use for everything from greetings to thanks, sums up a relaxed outlook on life. The value placed on protecting nature is felt in everyday culture too.
Costa Rica's General Spanish programmes are in the capital, San José. Set in a valley in the centre of the country, the city has cultural centres, museums and markets, making it a good base for both learning the language and observing local life. At weekends, trips to the Pacific or Caribbean coasts, volcanoes or cloud forests let you use what you learn in class out in nature.
Learn Spanish in Central America, surrounded by tropical nature.
With a programme based in San José, you can explore national parks, the landscapes around volcanoes and abundant wildlife on weekend trips.
Spanish is spoken at markets, on buses and in cafés, so you can try the phrases you learn in class in real conversations the same day.
Friendly people and an unhurried daily pace make getting used to a new language and culture more relaxed and enjoyable.
Although Costa Rica is tropical, San José enjoys mild weather all year thanks to its altitude. Roughly, December to April is the dry season and May to November the rainy season.
Getting around within and between cities is mostly done by bus. Small local eateries called sodas, open-air markets and nature trips are a big part of students' daily lives.
