Spanish on the beach in Sosúa, in the Caribbean.
The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern part of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola and is known for palm-fringed beaches, green mountains and warm-hearted people. As the birthplace of merengue and bachata, it is a country where music and dance accompany almost every moment of daily life. The colonial zone of the capital, Santo Domingo, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Dominican Republic's General Spanish programme is in Sosúa, on the island's north coast. With a calm beach set in a bay and small-town living, Sosúa suits those who want to study the language by the sea at a relaxed pace. In a small town you are in contact with local people more often, which makes putting what you learn into practice easier.
Spanish on the beach in Sosúa, in the Caribbean.
Sosúa's calm bay is right on your doorstep for swimming, snorkelling or spending time on the beach with friends after class.
You learn Spanish to a rhythm, in a setting where Dominican music can be heard in the streets, in cafés and on the dance floor.
The friendly atmosphere of the town helps you quickly get to know shopkeepers, neighbours and fellow students, and to speak Spanish every day.
The climate is tropical: warm and humid all year round, with sea breezes easing the heat. Summer and autumn can be wetter.
Sosúa is small, so most places are within walking distance, and local transport links it to nearby beaches and Puerto Plata. Beach days, water sports and evening get-togethers with music are at the heart of daily life.
