Spanish in Quito, high in the Andes.
Ecuador takes its name from the Equator that runs through it, and within its borders lie the Andes, the Amazon rainforest, the Pacific coast and the Galápagos Islands. Despite its relatively compact size, strikingly different landscapes can be reached on short journeys. Spanish is the official language, and in the Andean region indigenous cultures are still strongly felt in markets, textiles and festivals.
Ecuador's General Spanish programme is in the capital, Quito. Set in a high Andean valley surrounded by volcanoes, the city has a historic centre that was among the first places to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. With its churches, squares and mountain views, Quito is a place to study in a historic setting and a convenient starting point for exploring the country's regions.
Spanish in Quito, high in the Andes.
Standing between the two hemispheres at the Mitad del Mundo monument near Quito is just one of the unusual experiences you will have in Ecuador.
The squares and streets of Quito's UNESCO-listed historic centre mean your daily walks take place amid colonial architecture, grand churches and colourful balconies.
The volcanoes, cloud forests and Andean villages around the city offer weekend chances to use your Spanish surrounded by nature and local culture.
Despite being close to the Equator, Quito's high altitude gives it spring-like weather all year: mild days and cool nights. Rainy and drier periods alternate.
In Quito it helps to take things slowly for the first few days while you adjust to the altitude. Public transport and a cable car connect different parts of the city, and local markets, historic squares and mountain walks are part of daily life.
