The Americas
Spanish in Antigua, famous for its colonial architecture.
Guatemala is a Central American country of volcanoes, lakes and rainforests, where the heritage of Maya civilisation lives on today. Spanish is the official language, but many Maya languages are also spoken, and colourful handwoven textiles and traditional markets are the most visible sign of this cultural richness. The ruins of Tikal in the north and Lake Atitlán are among the country's most visited places.
Guatemala's General Spanish programme is in Antigua, set in a valley ringed by three volcanoes. This UNESCO-listed colonial city, with its cobbled streets, ruined baroque churches and colourful houses, is small enough to explore on foot. Antigua has long been known as a calm and characterful city chosen by students who want to learn Spanish.

Study with views of the Agua, Fuego and Acatenango volcanoes, and make the most of weekends with guided nature hikes.
Antigua's UNESCO-listed squares, churches and cobbled streets turn every day into a walk through history; even on the way to class you pass centuries-old buildings.
Traditional markets, handwoven textiles and villages around Lake Atitlán give you the chance to discover the region's deep-rooted culture while learning Spanish.
Thanks to its altitude, Antigua has mild, spring-like weather all year. Roughly, May to October is the rainy season and November to April the dry season; nights can be cool.
Central Antigua is easy to get around on foot. Meeting in the main square, browsing local markets, drinking Guatemalan coffee in cafés and joining volcano hikes are all part of students' daily lives.
